This is always one of my favorite organizations to support. Year after year I find myself trying to get more visibility and more donors to support this local organization.
Most are aware that while I'm not currently matched with a youth in our community today, I've had numerous matches over the years.
My first match was well over 18 years ago and has had a significant impact on me personally. Daegiona and I were matched when she was just a kindergartener. Shy and reserved we spent our lunches in the school library reading books and getting to know each other. We expanded our match to meet outside of school and she has grown up with my family and kids too. While our match closed years ago, we continue to keep in touch despite the years and miles. Over the years I've seen her grow and stretch into an amazing human being. She is confident and determined and this allowed her to run at the collegiate level. She is pursuing her dreams and is currently working as a news reporter for a station in Kentucky. Proud of her and all she has yet to accomplish.
I asked her to share her thoughts this year too. From Daegiona:
I can still recall my first visits with Stephanie, a shy yet energetic little girl spending lunch with someone who has turned into a true sister. My time with Stephanie is something I will forever be grateful for. At such a young age, Stephanie brought a new flare into my life, really help shaping me into the adult I am now. Everything was/is intentional with Stephanie, and being someone with older brothers, my time with her helped me discover feminine traits and characteristics about myself over the years.
Making (the best) meals together, baking cookies, learning, walking the dogs, or spending time with the entire family, all these things seem simple, but is just what a young girl may need.
Watching Stephanie’s family expand over the years has also been rewarding, admiring the work she does as a mother and wife, something that I have also took into my life, and future family.
Though my dreams of pursuing journalism have taken me far from home, I know her and her family are always in my corner, and vice versa.
Our match ended long ago, yet the sisterhood will never go away, and we both have BBBS to thank for that. I can’t wait until the day I have my first little, I know that I will pour the skills, love and intention Stephanie had into my life as a little girl, into another starting their own journey.
